About

Buy a better life is a website devoted to life enhancing products and ideas. It is devoted to things that are green, things that promote self sufficiency; revolutionary ideas for the twenty first century; products that will improve your life, that will ease your workload, that will make a positive impact on your surroundings. Buy a better life is about introducing items that pollute less and devices that are energy saving. It is about tips on how to re-use and re-cycle. It is all about making a better life for you, your loved ones, your community, and your planet.

This manifesto may read like a mighty tall order; but the truth is that there is no one silver bullet which will save the planet and make your life perfect. There are, however, many small and practical ideas out there which all go a tiny way to making a better life. It`s like re-cycling your empty bottles. Your good deed of bringing your empty bottles to the recycling point won’t in itself save the world from environmental catastrophe; but, nevertheless, it is a definite contribution and counted amongst the millions of bottles a year that are recycled it makes a definite and quantifiable difference to the planet.

And that is exactly how the articles on this website should be treated. All of them are intended to make a definite contribution to the welfare of the world, and your personal welfare. No serious person can doubt that the world is now in crisis. Our weather systems are going haywire. The polar caps are melting, the Amazon rainforest is being chopped down, and valuable species are daily becoming extinct. The world population is getting out of control. Pollution in cities is causing an alarming increase in the number of people with respiratory problems. The list goes on.

It makes us feel hopeless. What can one person do? Well the first thing to do is not give up. The next is to think of ways to improve your life style to make a reduction in your carbon foot print, to tread lighter on an already overburdened planet. Another valuable method is not simply to consume less but to also put something positive back: for example, by planting a tree. If you use recycled writing paper and plant a tree you are attacking the problem in both directions.  Not only reducing your use of natural resources but also adding to the store of precious resources.

I am not for one moment suggesting that you abandon your car, eat raw vegetables and go and live on a kibbutz. Being a tent dwelling hippy or a roving holy man is not for the majority. Whether we like it or not capitalism is here to stay. Smashing the system has never worked. History shows us that a revolution merely replaces one set of callous and corrupt leaders for another bunch of corrupt leaders who abuse the human rights of anyone who disagrees with their vision of society. Conflict won’t help the planet. Killing people may reduce the mouths to feed but the moral price is too high. Instead of attacking car users, it is much more constructive to lead by example and take the train to work. And it is becoming increasingly obvious that we cannot rely on our world leaders to make the decisions for us. Copenhagen showed that all too clearly. Instead we must all do our small bit. We should all have our walk on parts in the war to save the planet and not wait for a King Arthur to do it all for us.
