For those unsure how to proceed with programming there is an interview based wizard to guide you through inputting your daily settings. If the Honeywell Prestige HD is connected to the outdoor sensor it can tell you the outdoor temperature and make recommendations about settings and if it is also attached to a humidifier or dehumidifier it can tell you the optimum levels for your comfort based on outdoor humidity levels. In short Honeywell has provided a ‘holistic’ system that can monitor and optimize every aspect of indoor climate.
Outdoor Sensor
This can be bought at the same time as you buy a Honeywell THX9321R5000 Prestige HD Thermostat or separately. You simply put batteries in it and install the small sensor to a wall outside your house and then connect it wirelessly to the Prestige HD Thermostat indoors via RedLINK™ enabled technology. The outdoor sensor sends information to the thermostat regarding outdoor temperature and humidity levels. Armed with this information the Honeywell Prestige HD can suggest optimum room temperature and humidity settings to improve your comfort and allow you to make the best energy saving choices.
Humidifier / Dehumidifier
If you have a Honeywell humidifier or dehumidifier device or devices connected to your HVAC than the Prestige HD Thermostat can wirelessly control them. Combined with information from the outdoor sensor the Prestige HD can suggest the most comfortable humidity levels for you. If you have hardwood or bamboo flooring the Prestige HD can not only tell you relative humidity and dew point it can also make sure that the flooring is never at risk of damage.
Comfort Station
This is a small hand held device with a touch screen that you can buy with the Prestige HD thermostat or buy separately. It is like portable master control. It connects through a wi-fi connection to all the thermostats in the house. Through the comfort station you can change the settings on individual thermostats or all the thermostats at the same time. It can control up to 16 thermostats at the same time. Not only is this a convenient device but it also enables you to turn down the heating or cooling in uninhabited parts of the house to allow maximum savings. Just before you go to bed you can make sure all the thermostats downstairs in the kitchen, living room etc. are turned down. You can also check when the heating/cooling is due to start the following day.
Programming
The Honeywell THX9321R5000 Prestige HD Thermostat is a 7 day programmable thermostat with 4 heating/cooling periods per day. That is where the similarity between the Prestige HD and other programmable thermostats end. In consumer tests the Honeywell Prestige HD was given 9.5 out of 10 for ease of use. Not only is the large backlit touchscreen easy to see because of its high definition color graphics but also the style of the interface is unique. It gives you a series of simple options to choose from and allows experts to quickly input programs or beginners to go through an interview wizard to set up their programs. The Honeywell Prestige HD is basically a mini computer that provides a plethora of options to the advanced user while making things simple for the beginner.
Unlike other thermostats the Honeywell Prestige offers 3 fan settings: ‘On’ runs the fan continuously, ‘Auto’ runs the fan when the heating/cooling is cycling and ‘Circ’ which runs the fan 35% of the time when the heating/cooling is not on (as well as when it is on).
If the Prestige HD is connected to an outdoor sensor and a humidifier/dehumidifier it can make recommendations about comfortable levels for humidity by using the data collected from the weather outside. The ability of the Honeywell Prestige HD to make smart suggestions not only provides comfort for your home but also helps maximize monetary savings and protect hardwood and bamboo flooring and furniture from damage due to indoor relative humidity levels.
Another great feature of programming with the Honeywell THX9321R5000 Prestige HD Thermostat is that it is has a USB port. You can use the USB port to take the settings from one thermostat and upload them via a USB stick to other thermostats in the house. This saves time and ensures consistency in settings through out the house. For dealers the USB port allows them to upload their logo and contact information onto the Prestige HD so the homeowner has instant access to a number to phone in case of a problem.
Finally, the Honeywell Prestige HD offers French and Spanish as well as English.
Functions
The Honeywell Prestige HD also offers all the functions you would expect on a top of the range model. It has smart response (adaptive intelligent recovery) that tracks the changing of the seasons and learns the optimum times needed to pre-heat or pre-cool a room so the temperature is just right at the start of a programmed period. It also has auto change-over that automatically moves between heating and cooling with the changing of the seasons.
The clock on the thermostat works in real time and keeps track of daylight saving and makes adjustments to your programs accordingly. And even in the event of a power outage accurate time is maintained.
The thermostat also has a number of warnings telling you when it is time to replace the filters, humidifier pad, ultra violet bulb and batteries on the outdoor sensor. The thermostat itself is hardwired to the HVAC system.
And unusually for Honeywell programmable thermostats the Prestige HD also has a 4 digit keyboard lockout code that stops unauthorized people changing settings. Just remember to write the number down somewhere, in case you forget the pass code.
Compatibility
The Honeywell THX9321R5000 Prestige HD Thermostat is designed to work on the latest HVAC systems. It can regulate up to 2 stage heating and 2 stage cooling on standard systems and it can also manage heat pumps with 2 stages of cooling and 3 stages of heating. Few programmable thermostats can manage up to 3 stage heat pumps. And of course the Honeywell Prestige HD can control central air, heating only, cooling only, hot water and gas. Naturally the intuitive interface guides you through the installation process with a HVAC menu.
A note on installation – Honeywell doesn’t provide telephone support for self-installation for the Prestige HD because it recommends installation be done by a professional.
